Der Mr Wocker,

Your question is an interesting one to try and answer as I am a novice so to speak to the world of confined spaces and can only relay what I have seen in practice, which as a novice I actually thought the system I saw in practice was relatively easy to use and understand, Ill explain this system.

The system that I saw in operation was the use of a Stand By Man, who operates a Tally Board System and is in radio contact with the site main control room, He also is in contact with the Confined Space Operatives, who carry gas monitors, head torches and are also issued light sticks as a safety precaution, he also had the use of a air horn to warn the Operatives should they be required to exit the confine space quickly.

The system works by the CS Operative produces an ID card to the Stand By Man who then puts the ID card into the tally board & informs control how many people are in a confined space informing control of time in and time leaving the confined space, therefore no ID card no entry.

I believe there are several different types of systems in operation in different sites, the site I was recently operating on had a Gas Free Certificate and a Confined Space Board on show at the entrance to the relevant Confined Space, including a Tally Board, te site staff had been given a Confined Space Awareness Course & issued with a photo bearing ID card which had to be shown prior to enty into the confined space.

I hope this info assists you and claifies your question.
Look forward to your reply.
